Wilco Counseling

For parents

You know something's off. You don't have to figure it out alone.

A practical guide for Middle Tennessee parents of teens and young adults: what to watch for, how to start the conversation and what counseling with Joe looks like.

Signs it may be time to reach out

  • Changes in sleep, eating or energy that last more than a couple of weeks
  • Pulling away from friends, family, church or activities
  • Big drops in grades or motivation
  • Frequent stomachaches or headaches with no medical cause
  • Panic, constant worry or avoiding school or practice
  • Signs of self-harm, or talk of feeling hopeless or like a burden

If your teen talks about wanting to die or you believe they are in danger, call or text 988 or call 911 right away.

How to bring up counseling with your teen

Lead with what you've noticed and that you care, not with a diagnosis. Something like: "You've seemed weighed down lately, and I don't want you carrying it alone. I found someone who works with a lot of teens, and you can talk to him from your room." Let your teen know they can be part of the decision. Many teens are relieved when a parent opens the door.

What to expect

It starts with a free 20-minute call with you. After that, sessions are one-on-one between Joe and your teen by secure video, 45 to 50 minutes. Teens can text Joe between sessions, and Joe checks in with parents whenever it's needed.

Confidentiality and trust

Teens open up when they know their words are safe. Joe keeps the specifics of sessions private, and he is clear with everyone from the first session about the exceptions: if there's a risk to your teen's safety or someone else's, you will be informed. Parents hear about goals, progress and what they can do to help at home.

Supporting your athlete

The car ride home after a tough game matters more than most parents realize. Lead with care, not critique. Ask how they're feeling before you ask what happened. Joe helps sports parents find the words that build confidence instead of pressure.

Fees and insurance

Wilco Counseling is private pay and doesn't bill insurance directly, which keeps your teen's records private and the care flexible. You'll receive a superbill you can submit for possible out-of-network reimbursement. Ask about current rates on your consultation call.
